Our team fosters leadership and builds connections to achieve change.

The Water Foundation is a nonprofit strategic philanthropy working to fundamentally transform how we manage water in the West.  We help funders identify and act on opportunities to better manage water and engage in thoughtful, strategic grantmaking to our nonprofit partners to drive change.  We complement these activities with creative coalition building and thoughtful engagement with high-level decision makers.

The Water Foundation launched as the California Water Foundation in 2011, operating as an initiative of the Resources Legacy Fund with primary funding from the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation; Pisces Foundation; and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, with additional funding from the Walton Family Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

In January 2017, we transitioned to an independent, stand-alone foundation. With this transition, we are expanding our focus across the West, recognizing that waterways cross political boundaries and Western communities and natural places face similar issues. Respecting the unique character of different places in the region, we tailor lessons learned from our California work to challenges across the West.
